More people are affected by the negative impact of poor water supply and sanitation than by war, terrorism and weapons of mass destruction combined. Investment in knowledge on water and sanitation is an efficient and effective way to combat waterborne and vector-borne diseases which are a menace in most developing countries.

CLTS is an innovative way of mobilising communities to completely eliminate open defecation (OD) where they are facilitated to conduct their own appraisal and analysis and take action to become Open Defecation Free (ODF).

The course addresses how CLTS focuses on the behavioural change needed by investing in community mobilisation instead of hardware, and shifting the focus from toilet construction for individual households to the creation of 'open defecation-free' villages. The participant will be able to explore on the different ways that CLTS triggers the community's desire for change, propels them into action and encourages innovation, mutual support and appropriate local solutions, thus leading to greater ownership and sustainability.

Those to benefit from this course are persons working with NGOs in areas where there is high risk of diarrhea diseases, Public health officers, trainers of community leaders, community development persons and health officers.

The course fee is USD950, which covers tuition, course file and materials, a field visit and a certificate for participation. Accommodation and meals are USD380 for the 1 week.
